Roxanne Ritzel-McDowell grew up outside of Syracuse, New York and began doing artwork as a very young girl. She attended the Rochester Institute of Technology and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in the Fine Arts, majoring in Painting. From there she moved to San Francisco, California and studied with the well known visionary painter Bill Martin. In order to help pursue her own art she founded and opened the Ritz Frame Shop & Gallery in Point Reys Station, California. The gallery was highly avant-garde and showed many upcoming as well as established artists. Roxanne had numerous one-woman shows in the gallery as well as participating in group shows throughout the West Coast area. After moving back East in 1985, Roxanne became a framer and art consultant for Corpor-Art, a division of Another Atmosphere in Newburyport. From there, a 10-year hiatus as a tennis pro and in 1995 she opened the RFR Frame Shop & Gallery in West Newbury, Massachusetts where she currently continues to focus on her own art as well as providing framing and consultation for other artists and clients. Roxanne is also a guest artist in group art exhibitions at the Leighton Gallery in Blue Hill, Maine.
We had a full house last night! Thank you to all our students! Chef Mary Reilly walked us through a delicious and easy to replicate Indian dinner. As always, she imparted hints about ingredients, food prep, storage, etc etc all of which will help to ensure our success when trying the menu at home. The menu included:
Whole Wheat Samosas
Vegetables with Cilantro Chutney
Chicken Tikka Masala
Shrimp with Whole Spices
Smoked Eggplant (Eggplant Bharta)
Spinach with Fresh Cheese (Sag Paneer)

The cooking class was truly a wealth of information and the meal sumptious! New England Wine & Spirits of Newburyport paired the menu with Royal Challenge Lager, Gruner Veltliner (Winzer Krems, Austria), and Riesling (90+ Cellars, Columbia Valley, Washington State). The Newburyport Kitchen Tour is held each year in support of the Newburyport Elementary PTO - all profits directly benefit the PTO sponsored activities such as the science fair, transportation for field trips, after school programs such as the Author Festival or the African Dance Performance. These initiatives have significant impact and serve to greatly enhance the learning process for each individual child. This year the tour was held Saturday, July 24, 11:00am until 4:00pm.
Jewett Farms & Co. was proud to serve again as a sponsor and host for the after-party for tour volunteers, home owners, and fellow sponsors. We were joined by nearly 60 Tour Volunteers, Home Owners, and Sponsors who were treated to great food by Chef Mary Reilly of The Savory Kitchen, wine selections by Joyce Hulm of Old Bridge Cellars Wine Company & by New England Wine & Spirits. The Tour was a great success and volunteers enjoyed some well deserved down time in a beautiful space with delicious refreshments! See you next year!

It is with bittersweet emotions that I said arrivederci to my friends and colleagues of the Flourish Group last week. Formed as an outgrowth of the Port City Women's network, the Flourish Group was founded by Elaine Carroll of Vacation Homes Abroad - www.vacationhomesabroad.com - and Deb Green of Greetings by the Dozen - www.greetingsbythedozen.com - to serve as a mentoring group for women business entrepreneurs. Elaine & Deb then reached out to the multi-talented Jeannette Isabella - www.newburyportacting.org - who agreed to be the facilitator for the group. I joined forces early on for my own professional reasons and as the host for the monthly meetings. Flourish has met the third Tuesday of every month for the last year in the Jewett Farms Studio. The membership is kept to 15 (or less) to ensure that substantive and productive mentoring does in fact take place for all members. The agendas have included presentations by members about business challenges they are facing, guest speakers (social media, marketing, etc.), book reports, among others. This week's meeting "presentation" was offered by new member Deborah Danger of the Law Offices of Danger & Milana. Members were educated about trust, will, and estate law through a game they have developed - it was truly fun and very informational.
I would like to thank my fellow Flourish members for their support of Jewett Farms & Co. and of my own personal and professional aspirations. Here as JF&Co. as we move on to the next chapter in our growth, I have found my commitments need to shift to accommodate new & exciting developments and have made the difficult decision to leave Flourish. I wish my friends & colleagues much success individually and as a wonderful mentoring group! Bon chance!
As the word began to spread in Newburyort and surrounds about the cooking classes collaboration between Jewett Farms (www.jewettfarms.com) & Co. and The Savory Kitchen (www.thesavorykitchen.net) , Elena & Mary were approached recently by the Newburyport Mothers Club (NMC) events coordinator, Tamsin Trail, about the possibility of designing a special class for the Club membership. Together we planned an evening dedicated to Northern Italian Cuisine and recipes which would be easily reproduceable at home. To our delight more than 20 member moms joined us for the evening. The class included extensive instruction from Chef Mary about risotto and the many varieties it lends itself to, wine-braising chicken with shallots and pancetta, and finally a simple panna cotta dessert. Our guests enjoyed the class and the time with each other - sipping wine and tasting the delicious offerings. Much conversation was enjoyed by all and students left with a thorough, informative, and easy to follow menu & recipe packet.
All agreed the Studio lends itself perfectly to NMC events and we look forward to hosting the membership again!
